Trick or Treat
October 5th, 2011As I drive through town this October, I am noticing local businesses and organizations getting ready for celebrating Halloween. It brings back fond memories of Halloweens gone by, when my three children were little and money was tight. I often put together my own costumes for the children and I am proud to say that one year the two oldest won first and second prizes for most original costumes at our annual Halloween Ship’s party. This was the year I had dressed up my daughter as raggedy Ann by using orange yarn for braids and an old printed apron from my cupboard. I also happened to have an old pair of colorful stripped socks that were popular during the 70’s and I couldn’t bare to throw out yet so now they became useful again. A little bit of red on the cheeks and painted eye brows and I created a masterpiece.
As for my older son, I thought a robot was a good idea. We put different size boxes together and covered them up with aluminum foil and “voilá”, he passed as a homemade robot. Now it was time to work on the youngest boy. I thought he would make a cute Casper the friendly ghost so I cut up an old white sheet and used white body paint on his face. He was not happy about the paint and cried, so I had to wash most of it off his face. Off we went, trick or treating for candy in our small neighborhood anticipating all the loot they were going to bring home.
Today I get to enjoy my grandchildren anticipation of dressing up and trick or treating throughout their neighborhood. My daughter is following the tradition of assembling some very creative outfits for her three children. Last year the boys were dressed up as beatniks and my granddaughter was a little cute witch. This year I am looking forward to what my daughter has in store for them.
My partners have created these festive looking Fall and Halloween baskets for you to share with your loved ones. Just check my collections of gift baskets. If you have grandchildren and family members near or far from home, a basket from perfect gifts in a basket would be just ghoulish and fun to receive.
